HEALTH cut their teeth with squat gigs in Los Angeles before making their name as an ambitious, uncompromising industrial-noise band. But with 2020’s ‘DISCO4 :: PART I’ they pushed into uncharted waters, eschewing their earlier sound for a collaborative approach that threw together hip hop stars such as JPEGMAFIA with hardcore legends Full of Hell and synthwave maestro Perturbator.
While a vocal minority of fans decried this move towards the mainstream, the band’s core elements proved to be neatly transferable, ensuring that every song stood on its own two feet with each collaborator pulling their weight.
‘DISCO4 :: PART II' is the continuation of that idea and, true to its predecessor, pulls in just as many varied voices, as well as hosting the return of Perturbator.
Opener Dead Flowers features art-pop-metal shapeshifter Poppy in a blissed-out cut that runs through dream-pop as well as distorted shrieks, while Isn’t Everyone brings in industrial pioneers Nine Inch Nails for a sure contender for most miserable singalong of the year. Murder Death Kill takes its name literally and dials up the aggression for a short spurt of audio violence.
The dynamism of ‘…Part II’ has also led HEALTH to work with Lamb of God. But while Cold Blood may lead with the groove metallers’ patented aggression and throaty roar of Randy Blythe, this too eventually gives way to airy melodicism. Other highlights include AD, in which The Body lend their raucous experimentalism, and Gnostic Flesh/Mortal Hell, where both Backxwash and Ho99o9 offer stellar turns.
Where ‘...Part I’ succeeded, so does ‘...Part II’. The pairings may seem odd at first glance, especially Lamb of God with their relative lack of noise, industrial or atmospheric elements, but they’re never anything less than invigorating and fresh. HEALTH are in command of their own world to the extent that new faces only add to the depth of an immersive experience.
